Thanks to all Playground Build Day volunteers!    Dear Playground Build Day volunteers:
Thank you very much for all of the time and energy you gave to the playground build day on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The playground project was a collaboration between Tiny Tots Development Center and KaBOOM!, and was sponsored by the Amgen Foundation. Your efforts will make a real difference to the health and well-being of the South Seattle children we serve. Over 200 volunteers joined us between 7:00 A.M. and 3:00 P.M. to install playground equipment and build benches, a shaded seating area for infants, picnic tables, planter boxes, and more. It was wonderful to see everyone working together and the new playground and seating areas look beautiful. The kind actions of an individual or a group of interested people can echo throughout the lives of children who are growing up in challenging economic or social situations.

Tiny Tots Development Center Thanks 2007-2008 Grantors and Funders
During fiscal year 2007, TTDC applied for and received funding in the form of grant dollars and public funds provided through Requests for Proposals (RFPs). The generosity of these funding agencies made it possible for us to provide more complete services to children and families and to improve staff support and training. We were also able to develop a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan for the first time in the history of TTDC. A sincere "thank you" to our funders! We appreciate their support of Tiny Tots Development Center programs.
  • Seattle Foundation: Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Fund ($20,000)

Tiny Tots Development Center's Effective Early Learning Program Mentioned in 2007 Washington Gubernatorial Address

Washington State Governor, Christine Gregoire mentioned Tiny Tots Development Center by name in her State of the State address on January 9, 2007. She read a quote from a letter written by Shanta Hibbitt, the mother of a child enrolled at Tiny Tots. The letter described how a child benefited from the early childhood education we provide. Ms. Hibbitt’s son A. has received excellent preparation for kindergarten:

"Do you know that A. can write his full name? He is so excited about that. He shows me every chance he gets.

"He recognizes colors, shapes, and even speaks some Spanish.

"Being a single mother can be stressful and difficult. I work very hard daily in the office and at home for the purpose of creating a future for my children.

"Raising my children in a community where opportunity for education at times is limited, is extremely challenging.

"A.’s self-esteem and excitement about learning is beyond belief at times. The early learning programs at Tiny Tots are wonderful opportunities for families like mine.”

Gov. Gregoire’s speech was broadcast throughout Washington State on television and radio. The full text of her speech is also available online.

Tiny Tots Development Center appreciates this public acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of Tiny Tots staff.

On Wednesday, January 31, 2007, Tiny Tots Development Center’s Executive Director Angelia K. Maxie spoke on a panel at a joint meeting of the State of Washington House of Representatives Joint House Early Learning and Children’s Services Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Education. This work session focused on the Governor’s Washington Learns initiative, which aims to examine and improve the education system in Washington State.

Ms. Maxie was one of three western Washington early learning panelists who were requested to share their knowledge, strategies and insights into the successful implementation of early learning programs. Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire opened the meeting. Other education advocates speaking on panels during this meeting included representatives of the League of Education Voters, Thrive by Five, the Bremerton School District, the Washington Roundtable, and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA).  These panelists were followed by experts from the fields of K-12 education and higher education.

LOCAL AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AWARDED GRANT FROM SCHOOL’S OUT WASHINGTON

Tiny Tots Community Learning Center (CLC) at Emerson Elementary School has received $2,990 as a 2007 Quality Enhancement grant from School’s Out Washington. Among 22 programs across Washington State to be awarded the grant, Tiny Tots CLC at Emerson will use the funds to enhance its after school program for Seattle’s children.

“After school programs help working families, keep kids safe, and support learning,” said Danielle Baer, Communications and Grants Coordinator at School’s Out Washington. “With limited funding sources available, programs in Washington are finding creative ways to engage children while operating on shoestring budgets. Tiny Tots CLC at Emerson put together a terrific improvement plan that impressed our review team. The reviewers recognized the role that this program has in Seattle.”

Over 51 programs from across the state requested over $141,000 for improvement projects, but only $60,000 was available for grant awards.

School’s Out Washington provides services and guidance for organizations to ensure all young people have safe places to learn and grow when not in school.
