As we enter summer, sometimes we struggle to keep our children busy. Its very tempting to give them a computer or tablet to occupy them and keep them out of our hair. I realize this will happen so I have a few pieces of advise;
- Make sure you know what your child is watching, if you allow them to watch YouTube use the Kids version of the app. https://www.youtube.com/yt/kids/ This way you can restrict the content to age appropriate videos, and with its built in timer you can limit the time they can use it.
- Limit their use to two hours or less. This includes all screen time including television and computer use.
- When they play games look for games that make them think. "Junk" apps are simple to use and only require a child to tap or swipe the screen. Games which teach letters and numbers: http://www.readbrightly.com/best-reading-apps-for-4-8-year-olds/ , or thinking games: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/lists/critical-thinking-apps-games will help keep them sharp for school in the fall. Just remember games count as screen time too.
- Whenever possible sit with them as they play and watch so you can monitor what they are doing and expand their learning.
