Tiny Tots Goes Organic in Stages
Tiny Tots Children Learning about Eating Healthy at our various locations and the importance of eating fresh food.
In August 2011 we applied for and were successful in securing a grant with United Way to create a “Farm to Table” concept which included our Community Dinners that are hosted monthly. The concept created a few unexpected surprises:
#1 – We formed a lasting bond with the Rainier Beach Urban Farm and that partnership created our Healthy Bags that we currently have on site location for $5.00 each. The Healthy Bags provide weekly Organic Vegetable, Fruits and Herbs that are fresh and delicious. One family shared “I wait to plan my menu around my Healthy Bag offering for that week” Other families have shared that
“I never knew I enjoyed such a variety of vegetable and fruits”
#2 – Tiny Tots grew our Site Gardens, from One Site location to a Garden at Four Locations and we are adding a new garden next spring at the Helen Hicks building. This focus on the true connection between the Farm (or Garden) to table is inspiring our classroom staff and the children.
NOW – Tiny Tots the AGENCY is improving our Menu to upgrade and add Organic Choices to our Menu. We have taken over 2 months to review our current menu and get input from other experts in the Early Learning field to bring our children an organic experience that is Tasty, Healthy and still Cost effective for the Tiny Tots budget.
Effective October 7, 2013 all sites will begin to incorporate organic items like milk, eggs, fruits and vegetables for the current menu. Effective November 4, 2013 look for a New Menu based on Fruits and Vegetables that are in SEASON. ECEAP students at Wing Luke and Emerson your Lunch will continue to be served through our partnership with Seattle Public School.

We were very happy that the Legislature passed—and Gov. Jay Inslee signed—a 2013-15 state operating budget that includes 1,700 additional enrollment slots for the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP). That means by school year 2014-15, we will have 10,091 enrollment slots for this important program that since 1985 has helped children from low-income families get school-ready through high-quality classroom learning, health and nutrition services, and family support.
